The last few days of summer

The last few days of summer My summer internship ended on Friday, August 17. Today was the first day of classes. I therefore had eighteen days worth of summer to spend. Actually, I take that back. Two of those days were taken up by a wedding (turns out Im That Person Who Cries For The Entire Ceremony), eight of those by associate advising and freshman orientation responsibilities (including an awesome evening of teaching that I will post videos of soon), and one by class registration/textbook shopping/pre-semester club meetings. Thats not to say that I didnt absolutely love every second of the wedding, and the advising, and the teaching (I really did) but in my opinion, one of the magical characteristics of SUMMER that distinguishes it from THE SCHOOL YEAR is that my calendar looks blissfully white and empty. During the school year, my calendar looks, to quote my friend: like a clown threw up on it. You get the idea. There are classes and clubs and psets and tests, and even when theres nothing specific scheduled I get this looming feeling that theres something I ought to be doing. Thats not to say that I never have time to do fun stuff but I have time to do fun stuff because I believe its important to make time for fun stuff, so I schedule it in. Essentially: there are no empty calendar days during the school year. But those seven days at the end of the summer:  white. I could wake up in the morning and think: what do I feel like doing today? and then do it.  The rest of this post has nothing whatsoever to do with MIT life. It has to do with the non-MIT life: the pre-MIT life, the between-MIT-semesters life, the free time commodity. Heres how I spent it: with my grandma (who likes Hilbert Spaces), hiking and ziplining through the Maine mountains, at a Renaissance Fair, and roaming Boston with two very old friends. With my grandma, who likes Hilbert Spaces During and for the few days following the wedding, I lived with my grandma in her Manhattan apartment. My grandma is awesome. She is a retired math professor, who was willing (and had enough faith in me!) to give me a calculus lesson when I was nine. She still takes and teaches classes (one of her most recent classes was a multidisciplinary course on the concept of infinity, as expressed in mathematics and in poetry) and is one of the sweetest, most intellectually active people I know. In the days following the wedding, after the rest of my family left, she took me out to lunch and dinner, made me breakfast (despite my insistence that she really didnt have to do that) and took me out to get a pedicure (my toenails look pretty now!) I told her about pulsars and she told me that she likes Hilbert Spaces. My grandma likes Hilbert Spaces. My grandma knows what Hilbert Spaces are, period. In sum: shes the best ever, and Im glad I got to spend some time with her :) In Maine, visiting my NRAO friend Stephen From my grandmas flat, I took a train back to Boston, where my friend Stephen picked me up. Stephens the guy we made the epic galaxy cake for; he lives in Maine, and invited friends to go visit at the end of our NRAO internship. It turned out that I was the only person who could make it, but a few of his extended family members were there, too, so it was still a party. Maine is stunning. Stephen gave me and a couple of visiting family members a tour of Portland The Portland lighthouse. All I could think about were pulsars.   Elsewhere in Portland. I dont actually remember where, exactly. But it was beautiful! We also took a zipline tour. A ZIPLINE TOUR! As in: touring the gorgeous Maine mountain scenery BY ZIPLINE! Zipline is the way to travel, let me tell you. I even managed to zipline upside-down on my last attempt, although I never quite got the backflip-off-the-platform down (I tried!) The general idea (it was hard to get a good picture, sorry) basically, you clip into that rope, glide through trees and across drops and over streams, whoop a lot, and thank your lucky stars that you arent afraid of heights. I took this picture while waiting my turn on Zipline #4 of the tour. I ended up doing this one while spinning the tour guide wound up the rope, and as I ziplined across, I unravelled.   The last zipline course on the tour: the super-tall, super-long one. The one I did upside-down. It was awesome. The zipline tour group Im kneeling in the front. Turns out that ziplining is a really good bonding experience.   Other Maine adventures included stargazing, a baseball game, a shooting lesson, and a trip up to a ski resort, where we went hiking. I discovered that 1) Im a pretty good shot, 2) I like revolvers better than Glocks, 3) I have very little arm strength and rediscovered my love of fresh air. Also, shooting rifles is fun.   The ride up to the ski resort. My first chairlift! It was SO excited. I think I took as many pictures while on the chairlift as I did during the hike. Forgive me I grew up in a city, okay? Hiking trail scenery.   More hiking scenery.   Stephen drove me back to MIT, where I unpacked and braced myself for a week of orientation madness. I wont talk about that here, though, because this post is about the totally relaxing non-MIT parts of my late summer adventures. At a Renaissance Fair, with my French House (and Renaissance Fair veteran) friend Caitlin 15 If you havent been to a Renaissance Fair, no words can really do justice to how otherwordly it is. For a day, I was a princess roaming around a (quasi-) Renaissance village, watching jousts and being greeted good day, milady by random people. I will let pictures do the rest of the talking. Me and Caitlin at the beginning of the day, just after renting our costumes First stop: knife-throwing. Apparently Im a natural, or something. I got a certificate that says that I am now to be called Lady Anna take heed! Next stop: axe-throwing.   Bagpipe concert! Beautiful harp concert.   Turns out that King Richard is a pretty cool guy, who has A Thing for harp concerts. Why, yes I AM jousting on a zipline, with a foam sword. I hear princesses used to do that. Me and Caitlin at the end of the day sometime before then, I acquired a leaf headdress thing, and Caitlin acquired elf ears (which are unfortunately covered up by her hair trust me; theyre awesome.) I also learned the full details on how to jumpstart a car, since Caitlin and I returned to our rental vehicle only to discover that it had run out of battery. Took a very long walk through Boston with two very old friends I went out to dinner and took an hour and a half long walk with two friends from London. One Ive known since fifth grade; hes been my bff for a gazillion years. His family live in Cambridge, now, so fortunately that means I get to see him regularly. I hadnt seen the other friend in about seven years we were friends at the end of middle school and freshman year of high school, but he moved and we didnt really keep in touch. It was a nice little reunion and its always comforting to see old friends. Actually, I find that to be the most relaxing way to spend an evening right before a college semester starts: hanging out with friends who knew me WELL before I even knew what MIT was as Anna H. and not Anna H. 14, the MIT student. Today, summer disappeared and I had my first day of classes. Ill tell you more about those later I have some rough times coming up, in the form of the notorious Junior Lab. Im excited, though. I have a research project in the astrophysics department, teaching and public outreach, new astronomy friends at BU, a new career plan, a BIG NEW ROOM, two new plants   and lots of impending blog posts to tell you all about them. Thats it for the entirely-not-related-to-MIT-life stuff for a while, though. The semester has begun! Welcome back.

Allegories in of Mice and Men - 1686 Words

In the novel, ‘Of mice and Men’, John Steinbeck uses allegory to represent different themes and messages. An allegory is a story, poem or a picture which can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning. While reading Steinbeck’s book I noticed different metaphors such as the usage of animals and Curley’s wife. Throughout the whole book the reader can notice many animals mentioned such as rabbits, mice, the puppy and the old dog. Curley’s wife is also a sort of symbol. She represents the way in which the women were treated and looked upon in those days. The animals and Curley’s wife all symbolize different things in life in the 1930’s USA. They all symbolize the hopes and the dreams that the characters share which motivates and drives them†¦show more content†¦Saying that the rabbits should be furry, fluffy and colorful makes their life even more padded and warm, which protects them from the tough world at that time. The animals a re a great way to show and symbolize different things. To find the allegorical meaning you only have to look in between the lines to find a different meaning to the words and sayings. This can be seen in the case of Curley’s wife. By looking more closely at the story, one can see that Curley’s wife is also a metaphor which symbolizes the way which other people looked upon women in the society of the 1930’s. Curley’s wife represents a whole marginalized group in the American society at that time. In the novel, characters are never fully developed, but instead appear as outlines or symbols of real people. Candy, Crooks, and Curleys wife represent the discriminated groups of age, race, and sex. Curley’s wife has been given an overall picture in the eyes of George and Lennie before they even meet her, by Candy. The picture Candy paints about her hints at how she tends to give all the men on the ranch ‘the eye’. Nobody really knows Curley’s wife because nobody ever talks to her and listens to what she really has to say. Curley’s wife wants attention. She wants people to notice her. Jack Henry Abbott was born on January 21, 1944, on a military base in Oscoda, Michigan. Growing up in foster care and living in the under the state laws his whole life Jack Abbot didnt have much of a chance for a normal life. From the time that he was born he was living in the state foster care system. After a short while he was in trouble with the law. As an adolescent he was living in the state juvenile detention center. Jack would be punished because he was just that sort of kid. Due to the fact that everyone knew his past he was punished his whole life. Abbott first was sent to the boys school because of failure to conform to the foster care home and systems. The experiment showed that children raised by the state in a foster care system are mor e likely to not get married and not go to college. During the time that Jack was last paroled and out of the state penitentiary he should first been placed in a half way house. It being the first time that he was out in public and with people that interacting with people not in jail would have been a shock for anyone in his position. There are lots of different sorts of advertisements; for example, there is television, the radio, magazines, billboards, buses, the underground and the Internet. Advertising affects our everyday life, because advertising is everywhere you go.  My first advert I have chosen, is selling hair dye, the product is Live hair colour in red.  My second advert I have chosen, is selling trainers, by Skechers USA. My first impression of the Live advert is that the colour red in an unusual hair colour to dye your hair into.  My first impression of the Skechers advert is that the trainers would suit everybody because they have a variety of different colours.  I found the Live advert in a Bliss magazine, so the target audience is for teenage girls aged between fifteen and nineteen.  I also found the Skechers advert in a Bliss magazine so, again, the target audience would be for teenage girls.  The Live advert is using informative language, because it tells you how the New Luminance Energizer works and how it leaves your hair shiny and glossy. The Live advert has also used repetition. The words Live and Red have been repeated a few times. They have done this to emphasise it, to make it stay in your head and remember it. The Skechers advert has used end stop lines Pure Fun! This is when a line is completed with a full stop. It marks the end of a thought, making it into a statement.  In the Live advert they have constructed the sentences so the main sentences are noticeable. They used big font and coloured writing, There is Red, and there is Live Red. The more informative sentences at the bottom in a smaller font, When is red more than just red?  They havent used sentences in the Skechers advert because trainers dont need to be explained, most trainers are the same and if these trainers were any different it would say so. In the Live advert they have used questions, When is red more than just a red? statements, There is Red, and there is Live Red and a statement of fact, Discover the secret or Red Luminance, with an intense pigment, the Red Energizer.  In the Skechers advert they have written Pure Fun! which is a slogan, a statement and an explanation.  The Live advert is very informative because they explain how the hair colour works.  The Skechers advert isnt very informative, but trainers dont need explaining. The key words for the Live advert, not including the logo, company name and the slogan is, There is RED, and there is LIVE RED, NEW, RED LUMINENCE and RED ENERGIZER.  The slogan for the Live advert is Live-Brings Colour Into Your Life. The company has chosen this slogan because if you want a different hair colour and you want to be different from everyone else, you would go for a colour like this, because its unusual and not many people have it. The slogan for the Skechers advert is Pure Fun! The company chose this because they want people to have fun and enjoy themselves when they wear their trainers. The effect of the slogan is that its short simple and to the point.  The Live advert has two girls and two boys sitting at the cinema.  The Skechers advert has a group of friends at the front, one of them is dancing, there is a DJ at the back and there is a girl watching a boy playing pinball at the back.

A manager should know how to execute his powers for the betterment of the staff and the company. A manager has to go through many stressful situations that are full with moral and ethical dilemma and so he must possess good judgment and analytical ability. VARK is in the category of instructional preference because it deals with perceptual molds, or senses. It does not address are test and smell. The VARK inventory provides metrics in each of the four perceptual modes, with individuals having preferences for anywhere from one to all four. There are also differences in learning approaches for the four VARK Learning Styles. Visual learners prefer maps, charts, graphs, diagrams, brochures, flow charts, highlighters, different colors, pictures, word pictures, and different spatial arrangements. As we know, the United States consumes more power than any other country in the world. The success of the U.S. can be directly related to its power consumption. Most of our electricity that power our homes comes from burning fossil fuels (Coal, oil etc.) that puts Co2 in the atmosphere, this is causing major pollution. The U.S. has mainly refused to take this matter seriously, as showed by their refusal to ratify the Kyoto Protocol, and continues its high consumption. The amount needed in the future will only rise and because of that reason we need new alternative sources of energy. These new alternative power sources include wind, solar, and hydro. Two of which are of great interest to architects are ‘Active Solar’ and ‘Wind Technology.’ I believe that architects have a responsibility to look for new sources of energy, not just for our environments sake but to gradually lose our dependency on fossil fuels which is quickly running out while demand keeps inc reasing. This research paper is about the ideas behind the technology and how Architects can use active solar and wind technology to power homes now and in the future. Wind technology is â€Å"a system of equipment that is used for gathering and converting wind into mechanical or electrical energy and of transferring these forms of energy to the point of use or storage.† The two main uses are for electric generation and water pumping. Wind has a lot of the drawbacks as does Solar(which I will get to later) but the constraints are less geographic and much more meteorological. Which means the future of this type of energy source is dependant upon some of the most erratic forces on earth. I almost support this idea because it will force the development and use of some very impressive storage and planning systems. Wind technology is not without its positives though. Conventional wind machines are getting much better in regards to noise and safety and the simple answer to the problem of densely settled areas is for architects and engineers to place the machines in the ocean, or have people get used to them in close proximity, which I don’t see happening any time soon. Wind technology in rural areas does make practical sense. Home builders, farmers and small businesses can easily set up a small wind generator without much opposition as you would encounter in highly dense areas.

And when they say ‘bully, we tend to think of it as someone as large, strong, scary, muscular guy that trips on the weak smaller guy. But as the world shift into modern times, modern versions also arise.Verbal bullying can be Just as cruel if not worse than physical bullying. And this time the emotional phase Is at stake. Not only can this cause trauma, but It also drive you crazy and cause mental Illness. The bully will give more pain mentally than physically because they will degrade their target, making them feel less about themselves. There is also this ‘cyber bullying', where the bullying steps up on the high-tech level. The bully will take on less time on going to his victim to punch him.He just texts or calls his object or uses the internet, to spread bad words bout his target. This is the issue that arouse together with the social media networks, Its negative effects In every aspect of a person, physically, mentally, emotionally. Socially. The World Wide Web Is now techno tool for these bullies to commence their operation and harass their victims online. And it doesn't stop when the target goes offline. Of course, the bullying would cause negative social views to the victims.They would not go out and socialize through any form because of the trauma and depression of being harassed online. I never experienced bullying. When I was a kid, I was sort of the bully. I don't know how It happened but I could make the other kids obey me whenever we play that time. Add to that I was being spoiled by my grandma, whenever my grandma would always give me what I want. I also remember biting my pre-school teacher during tutorials after class because I want to go home already. My aunts and uncles would tell stories on how I was kind of ruthless that time.They said I would punish the kids if they disobey me by pulling heir hair straight to the ground, and I would smash their tiny little hands by a stick many times. They say I was never stopped because my grandma would always defend me. Okay, I really was a bully. I never said what I did was right. And the important thing is that mentality was straightened, somehow. I still was to persecute, yes, persecute, the deserving to be punished, really, but I don't perform it because, of course, it was a bad thought, also I think it was, in some way, childish to bully at my GE.Although we always see the bully as the bad guy, we could perhaps understand them. If we hate them so much, we're no different to them. So let's look deep and comprehend on why these behaviors are superior to the bullies. Maybe they had a they took bullying as a defense mechanism. Bullying never really cause anything good to people. The victims would oftentimes suffer to depression, trauma, misery, inferiority, rejection, distress, and a lot more of physical, emotional, mental, social main bullying comes with.I really am against bullying. Of course, no one would want them, or their children, or brother, or sister, or friend, or anyone close to them, to be bullied and brought down. We want to end this. We want to take a stand and protect the ones we love. We wouldn't really understand bullying and why it happens to, nowadays, a lot of people unless we open our minds. And this is one of my targets as a psychology student, to know them, understand them, and to eventually make a better change.

Family History Center Mormon Genealogy Records Near You

While almost every genealogist would love the chance to visit the famous Mormon Family History Library in Salt Lake City, its not always a possibility. For those of you in Sydney, Australia it is a mere 8000 miles (12,890 km) after all. The good news, however, is that traveling halfway around the world is not necessary for using the millions of microfilm rolls, books and other genealogical resources of this amazing library -- thanks to Family History Centers. A vast network of over 3,400 branch libraries, known as Family History Centers (FHCs for short), is open under the umbrella of the Family History Library. These Family History Centers operate in 64 countries, with more than 100,000 rolls of microfilm circulated to the centers each month. These records include vital, census, land, probate, immigration, and church records, as well as many other records of genealogical value. Located in almost all major cities, and many smaller communities, it is possible that a Family History Center is located within an easy driving distance of your home. The use of any Family History Center is free, and the public is welcome. Church and community volunteers are on hand to answer questions and lend assistance. These centers are staffed and funded by local Church congregations and are usually located in Church buildings. These satellite libraries contain a large number of resources to help you with your genealogy research including: Genealogy recordsGenealogy books and mapsFamily historiesFamily tree databases The majority of Family History Centers have a large number of books, microfilms and microfiche in their permanent collections which can be viewed at any time. However, many of the records which you will be interested in will NOT be immediately available at your local FHC. These records can be requested on loan for you by a volunteer at your FHC from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. There is a small fee required to borrow materials from the Family History Library, around $3.00 - $5.00 per film. Once requested, the record will usually take anywhere from two weeks to five weeks to come into your local center and will remain there for three weeks for your viewing before being returned to the center. Tips on Requesting Records From the FHC You have the option of renewing your loan if you need more time.Any records that you request on microfiche can remain in your local FHC on permanent loan. Microfilm rolls that are renewed twice (a total of three rental periods) will also then stay on permanent loan at your local FHC. You can arrange this permanent loan from the beginning as well, by asking the volunteer at the Family History Center and paying for all three rentals upfront.Books which are in the Family History Library can NOT be loaned to local Family History Centers. They wish to share the family history information they have collected with people of all faiths. Your religious beliefs will not be an issue, and no missionaries will come to your door because you used one of their facilities.
